The glory is in you ---
A writer with strategic sensibilities, a producer’s intentional eye, a genuine ♥️ for community and literacy, and the founder of #blkcreatives.
As the creator of the viral manifesto, “This world does not move without Black creativity”, I want to share 10 more things I’ve created that I’m proud of, what these various projects have taught me, and what I want to see moving forward in my work as I am currently open for new opportunities, full-time, contract and project-based. You can find the short version here. click each pic for more.
1. a collective preserving Black creativity and encouraging creative freedom
Started in 2010, #blkcreatives is the only digital collective w/ a genuine concern for the overall wellness of Black creators. It’s connected thousands of creatives to each other, to personal and professional resources, and opportunities, and is one of the most trusted brands on the Internet. Online roots with real-life magic, it honors Black creativity of the past, present, and future.
what it taught me + next steps moving forward
As a leader you have to define what success looks like for you and not based on any societal expectations. I HAVE to make time to listen to my intuition. I want to do more projects that align with how we’ve evolved, the opportunity to include video and more interviews with Black creators - email me to talk paid sponsorships, partnerships, and promotion (companies/orgs of all sizes welcome).
social strategies & copywriting that amplified Black stories AND branded content that feels authentic to the experience
With #blkcreatives and our signature digital watch parties via paid brand partnerships, I’ve had the opportunity to write copy that’s been used in campaigns for Lifetime (TLC Forever, Janet Jackson Documentary, Mary J. Blige’s Real Love), A&E (Being Bobby Brown, Right To Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution, Exposing Parchman), and on my own, Spotify’s Frequency via HUE Unlimited.
what it taught me + next steps moving forward
Nostalgia is a BIG draw in our society and the entertainment industry (and those adjacent) must employ people who can properly pay homage to Black icons during EVERY aspect of the creative process. It makes the campaign more effective. email me as I want to do more social strategy and writing work around Black culture across mediums (companies/orgs of all sizes welcome).
intentional tributes + interviews for cultural icons
Whether it’s honoring John Singleton three times (1,2,3) helping with social strategy for ToMaryWithLove, or interviewing Omar Epps, I use my work to celebrate Black creativity.
what it taught me + next steps moving forward
There are multiple ways to honor Black cultural icons if you leave the heart of the creating up to the ones who have the experience AND background to do so properly. Email me to discuss more.
community engagement in spaces for reading literacy
Children’s literacy is close to my heart, I believe that literacy provides a gateway to personal, communal, and professional freedom. I’ve worked and served with Memphis-based org Arise2Read and helped lay the foundation for Tristyn’s BookClub.
what it taught me + next steps moving forward
Literacy is just as much as an economic issue as it is an educational one. I’d love to begin do creative reading and writing sessions with children, email me if interested.
cultural pieces that create conversation
My rule for cultural writing is that I only write if I have something valuable to add to the overall conversation and I can do it from a place of love and respect. I’ve written for Essence, NBC News Think, Andscape, and more.
what it taught me + next steps moving forward
I have an observant eye that asks questions that matter and I work to write pieces that serve as mini time capsules, they hold up well. Email me for writing assignments, as I am currently open.
original content that inspires creativity
I created an indie digital e-mag called Hey, More Kindness and helped produce LinkedIn Park with Lisa Beasley, more to come!
what it taught me + next steps moving forward
Creating in any medium helps me become a better writer, communicator, & marketer. Interested in me helping you create your original work? Email me
writing at the intersection of wellness and culture
Wellness and culture go hand in hand in my opinion, and my favorite pieces for Glamour, 23andMe, and Morning Brew highlight this unique intersection that amplifies underserved stories from an angle of care.
what it taught me + next steps moving forward
Wellness is important to me because historically Black voices and needs have been left out of the conversation. Email me, if you’d like me to help your platform move it to the forefront.
speaking opportunities that lead to solutions
I’ve spoken at the ULYP of Middle Tennessee ACE Leadership Conference, the Pratt Institute, and more - giving insight, context, and solutions at the intersection of careers and culture.
what it taught me + next steps moving forward
I grow AND help while speaking and I want to do it more - students, ERG groups, and brands looking to care for Black creators. Email me.
undeveloped short stories, scripts, story ideas, waiting to be birthed at the proper time
I believe that my best work is still happening and I’m excited about the possibilities that await me.
